You might recognize Erika Spring’s signature blunt-cut bangs and sweet, dreamy voice from her work with Brooklyn pop trio Au Revoir Simone—but when the synth-heavy group decided to take a break a few years back, she knew she needed to keep her creative momentum going. The final product of her efforts? A self-titled, six-track EP, which dropped just last week.
Of the differences between her group’s songs and her own (the latter of which were produced by Violens’ Jorge Elbrecht), she told me, "I feel like all my older songs were ‘relationship songs.’ These ones are a little more personal, a little more about me. As i get older, I feel like I need more reminders that I’m on the right path, like little pep talks—and there’s definitely an element of that in here."
So how did her solo songs, like the drum-laced "Hidden" and the soft, ethereal "6 More Weeks," come to be? "They start with melodies that come into my head while I’m walking around, riding my bike, trying to fall asleep at night—that happens a lot," says Erika. "I always have my iPhone recorder close by these days—it’s much easier than writing out the notes. All the songs just start out as little lines of lyrics, some of which I go back and change later."
As for her EP’s hazy, pastel-toned album art, it turns out there was a fashionable tie-in at play. "It’s a close-up of a shirt!" Erika explained. "It’s a top I got from this Swedish vintage shop called Malin Landaeus. The owner does these hand-dyed silk tops that are repurposed from vintage pieces. They’re done in these really bright colors—not tie-dyed and not splatter-painted, but somewhere in between. They’re just so beautiful and watercolor-y…and so one of them became the album cover."
Au Revoir Simone fans, by the way, needn’t worry—the group’s still going strong, and is currently recording a new album Erika hopes to release next January. "A lot of solo projects signify the end of a band," she explains, "but this wasn’t like that at all. The girls have been so supportive of me."
