Seeing as how tonight’s Met Gala—and its accompanying Costume Institute exhibit—is honoring legendary couturier Charles James, we were expecting to see tons of sweeping, full-skirted gowns on tonight’s red carpet. And while some have fittingly chosen James-inspired looks for the big night, Lupita Nyong’o clearly decided to ditch the dress code in favor of that of an entirely different era—the 1920s.
Nyong’o showed up to tonight’s Met Gala in an emerald-colored, semi-sheer Prada flapper frock dripping with sparking stones and feathers—topped with an equally Jazz Age-appropriate headpiece. Twitter immediately went berserk, of course, with some (er, most) panning the look and others applauding Nyong’o’s fashion fearlessness. For our part, we think the jewel-toned hue is absolutely perfect on her skin tone—but it does look a wee bit like a dress left over from Prada’s The Great Gatsby wardrobe from last year, no? What do you think of Lupita Nyong’o’s daring Met Gala look?
