We figured it would be difficult for Lupita Nyong’o to follow up her Oscar-winning breakout role in 12 Years a Slave with something remotely as critically acclaimed—case in point: in April, a month after the Academy Awards, Entertainment Weekly‘s Mark Harris published a column titled, "Why can’t Lupita Nyong’o find a role worthy of her?".
Well, the 31-year-old starlet announced on her Instagram earlier today that she’s been cast in the highly buzzworthy Star Wars: Episode VII—as in, the most epic film of all forthcoming epic films, set to hit the big screen in 2015. The 31-year-old actress wrote: "I can finally say it out loud and proud: I’m going to a galaxy far far away!"
It’s a pretty fierce role for Nyong’o, who, realistically, had her pick of blockbusters up for grabs. To bring her award-winning acting chops to the J.J. Abrams-directed saga will not only legitimize the flick, but will provide her career some unexpected depth. Plus, this means we’ll likely get to see her swishing around a Lightsaber—an image that should awesomely speak for itself.
