The first lipstick I ever loved was not red or pink or sheer. It was electric purple—MAC’s Violetta, to be exact. I didn’t typically wear lipstick at the time (I was 18) but the minute I saw the violet-lipped models at Zac Posen’s Spring 2009 show, I was compelled to take a beauty risk.
The lipstick quickly became my Friday and Saturday night makeup staple. It stood out in a crowd without being too over the top, and gave my yet-to-evolve-from-high-school style the edge it needed.
I later expanded my lip color collection to include more daytime-appropriate hues and purple fell out of my rotation, but lately I’ve been feeling nostalgic.
First, Pantone announced Radiant Orchid as the 2014 Color of the Year. Then, this past weekend, Selena Gomez wore purple lipstick on the Z100 Jingle Ball red carpet and totally nailed it (see above)—and to top it all off, yesterday MAC relaunched its popular bright, matte violet shade, Heroine. I think it’s a sign, don’t you? Purple lipstick is back.
