One of the undeniable perks of being an editor is being able to see designers’ and brands’ collections months before they’re available to shop—but of course, it’s part of Lucky‘s mission to pass those exclusive sneak peeks along to you, our readers. Late last week, I popped by Madewell HQ to check out the brand’s Fall 2014 offerings—and though I’ve had just about enough of this frigid weather (seriously, it’s still snowing on March 31?!), head of design Somsack Sikhounmuong is giving us lots to look forward to once temperatures drop next autumn.
Inspired by Manhattan—literally, everything from Tribeca’s wide and quiet streets to the metalwork of the Brooklyn Bridge—Sikhounmuong whipped up buttery leather jackets, quilted bombers and chunky footwear, all pieces ideal for an on-the-go city girl. Sticking primarily to a palette of dark neutrals, it’s quite a departure from Madewell’s Erin Wasson-modeled spring lineup, a mishmash of stripes, camo and eyelet. Still, I spied many of the label’s tried-and-true hits worked into the looks; here a tied-around-the-waist plaid shirt, there a cheeky French slogan sweatshirt. In short, there’s something for everyone in this particular mix.
The best part? Sikhounmuong sent us (and only us!) a trio of his Fall 2014 sketches, which you can check out above—along with close-ups of some of the collection’s best looks.
