Mara Hoffman’s been designing psychedelic, colorful printed swimwear for over five years now—and when she was recently given the opportunity to shrink those designs down to children’s size, she couldn’t resist. It all started, says the New York designer, when the buying team from Madewell (which carries select Hoffman pieces in its stores) came to see her Resort 2014 swimwear offerings—and happened to spot some early designs intended for her first childrenswear line. “They told us that we had to meet with Crewcuts,” Hoffman says, “and we thought it was such an awesome concept that we felt it was best to launch with them exclusively.”
The result of print-happy Hoffman’s team-up with J.Crew’s kids’ label? A collection of bikinis, one-pieces, rash guards, ponchos, dresses, harem pants and rompers splashed with graphics inspired by the mythology and art of India. “The Ganesh print is inspired by one of my go-to deities that I call upon when I need help—it has a joyous, childlike spirit,” Hoffman explains. “And the Ananda print incorporates birds that represent happiness and bliss—perfect for kids!”
