There’s a lot of big changes brewing at the house of Marc by Marc Jacobs. The brand, while still helmed by its eponymous founder, just brought on British designers Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley as its new creative and design directors, respectively. Announced in WWD today, this startling news has raised lots of questions—most importantly, how will this affect forthcoming collections?
According to Robert Duffy, president and vice chairman of Marc Jacobs International, the first step is improving overall clothing quality; then, "to introduce new products" beyond the ’70s-inspired pieces (disco print dresses, overly chunky jewelry, flared trousers) and affordable tchotchkes (graphic T-shirts, tote bags, keychains) the label is best known for. But that doesn’t mean there’ll be a total overhaul. Although her title is new, Hillier is no stranger to Marc by Marc’s trademark style: she’s been working with the company in some capacity for roughly 10 years already. And while Bartley is starting this new venture with a totally fresh set of eyes, she was handpicked by Hillier for the gig—so the two probably have overlapping tastes. As for how much those tastes overlap with the Marc by Marc Jacobs sensibility, well, only time will tell. (And by time, we mean the Spring 2014 show next New York Fashion Week.)
