In the flesh—say, wafting into NYC’s Il Cantinori restaurant late on a Wednesday night, one sister in a floor-length silk slipdress, the other in a nubby knit sweater—the Olsens are even more luminescent (the glowy skin! the shiny hair!) than in pictures. It makes sense, then, how much the two love beauty in general and fragrance in particular: “Fragrance is part of everyone’s daily routine,” says Ashley. “It’s in our shampoo, face lotion, lip gloss …” Indeed, their first two scents (right) incorporate elements of some of their favorite beauty products. We had to know, of course, precisely what those products were:
Skin: Mary-Kate loves Rodin and Biologique Recherche skincare; Ashley, too, is a Biologique Recherche fan: “I use the cleansers and creams twice a day and get facials regularly,” she says. Stuck on a desert island, Ashley would bring sunscreen, Mary-Kate, coconut oil: “It has endless uses.” Both agree on the ultimate lip product: “Brave Soldier Lip Defender ($9, bravesoldier.com)”
Hair: “We’ve worked with [Dove Hair celebrity hairstylist] Mark Townsend since we were 12,” says Mary-Kate. For color, “nobody does blonde better than [L.A. colorist] Lorri Goddard,” says Ashley. Both air-dry their hair: Ashley washes with Frédéric Fekkai PrX Reparatives ($20, fekkai.com), and Mary-Kate smooths Rodin by Recine Hair Oil ($65, oliolusso.com) into the tips a few times a week.
Best tips: “Our mom taught us to use eye cream at a young age,” says Ashley. For emergencies, Mary-Kate has a good one: “A makeup artist once told me to suck on an ice cube if your face is puffy.” Skincare—not makeup—wherever possible, in other words. Ashley sums up the philosophy: “Less is more in everything Mary-Kate and I do.”
