Since there’s no golden formula for the perfect evening skincare routine, it takes plenty of trial and error to find one that works. But even then, you’ve got to regularly shake up your standby mix with a few new products. How else will you know if there’s something even better out there?!
To help you round out your bedtime beauty regimen, this series will highlight the cleansers, moisturizers, serums and masks our editors use before hitting the sack. First up is our senior beauty editor, Maura Lynch, who admitted "the whole beauty editor thing" prevents her from sticking to a super strict program—but she’s still loyal to a few old favorites! Read on for her full evening skincare routine, then shop her go-to products in the slideshow above.
"First, I remove all my makeup with Koh Gen Do Cleansing Water or the Neutrogena Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. Then, I use a light, creamy cleanser like Cetaphil or Biologique Recherche’s Lait VIP 02. I also use some sort of toner—right now it’s Phytomer Rosee Visage. Most dermatologists say that you don’t really need toner, but I like to think it helps the products I put on later sink in more easily. While my skin is still a little wet, I go for the next step, serum. There are three I’m using right now: Tata Harper Elixir Vitae, which just feels so luxurious and is made with lots of natural hydrating, firming ingredients, Verso, which is infused with a really gentle form of retinol, and Kate Somerville Hydrakate Linerelease, which has hyaluronic acid and peptides; I’ve been using it for years.
Next, I slather on the moisturizer. At the moment, I’m rotating Kate Somerville Age Arrest Anti-Wrinkle Cream, Caudalie Night Infusion Cream and Elemental Herbology Facial Souffle. For eye cream, I prefer something really light and serum-like. The thick, emollient ones always end up in my eyes in the middle of the night, forcing me to rub them like crazy, undoing all the good things that eye creams are supposed to do in the first place! I’m currently using Fresh Black Tea, Olay Regenerist and Verso. Finally, just as I slip into bed and switch on my white noise machine (this is New York, after all), I put on By Terry Baume de Rose lip balm.
In terms of treatments, I’m not religious about it but once week or so I use some sort of mask. My favorites are La Prairie Cellular 3 Minute Peel, SK-II Facial Treatment Mask, Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Mask, and Fresh Rose Face Mask. But if I feel like my skin needs some extra exfoliation and I’m too lazy to do a mask, I’ll sweep a Cane + Austin Retexturizing Treatment Pad over my skin before putting on my serum.
