Uh-oh—YouTube star Michelle Phan might be in big trouble. Ultra Records, the label that represents major EDM artists like Kaskade, Calvin Harris and Steve Aoki, claims that Phan has used nearly 50 of their songs without permission in tutorials that have been viewed upwards of 150 million times. Ultra is seeking damages of $150,000 for each copyright infringed.
Phan’s legal team denies the claims, telling TMZ, "Ultra fully agreed to allow Phan to use the music and feels her videos have promoted their music and ‘showcased [them] to an international audience.’"
Meanwhile, Kaskade, who is among the artists featured in Phan’s videos, has taken to Twitter to defend her. "I’m not suing @MichellePhan + @ultrarecords isn’t my lapdog. I can’t do much about the lawsuit except voice support for her." Are you on Team Phan?
