When I assess models’ personal style, I automatically knock about eight points off. It’s not that I hate models—I don’t. But I do hate when their most simple, vanilla outfits are slid into this bloated "model off-duty" category implying intentionally polished style. It’s preferential treatment.
Like, let’s be real: a model in jeans, a white t-shirt and black booties doesn’t look incredible because of her fashion sense; she looks incredible because of her figure (well, most of the time, depending on the items in question). So I like to counteract that by subtracting some points first, only awarding them back if an outfit would look just as intriguing on someone who isn’t a professional clothes hanger.
That’s why I’m obsessed with Miranda Kerr right now: the woman takes risks, relying on her clothes—not just her body—to turn heads. Whether that’s in a pitch perfect Céline-y look (two-tone pants, a sleeveless silk blouse, a dramatically oversized tote) or something more Solange-Knowles-explorative (like that floral-on-floral look above), Miranda lets her fashion sense communicate a strong, stylized message.
As a nice change of pace from the bombshell uniform she wears for Victoria’s Secret parties and public apperances (Helmut Lang leather pants, Hervé Léger bandage dresses), her daytime look is eclectic and detailed. Better yet, it’s anything but lazy or generic. (If only all "model off-duty" looks could boast the same thing.) So today, in honor of Miranda’s 30th birthday, I’ve shopped out a handful of her best recent street style looks. Click through to see them!
