The first thing you’ll notice when you walk into my (tiny) apartment is my extensive—probably too extensive—necklace collection. Hanging on hooks in the entryway, sparkly bibs reside next to long beaded numbers in every color of the rainbow. A girl has to have her jewels, right? It’s a cluttered, rhinestoned, sparkly mess that, frankly, looks a little like an oft-rummaged-through jewelry box on hooks.
But when I walked into Madewell recently and saw their array of minimalistic, burnished metal pieces, I decided the under-statement necklace was exactly what I needed to add to my ever-growing collection. It’s a simple piece that still adds that extra oomph to a high-collared neckline—without the "Hey, look at me!" obviousness.
There are certain things that will never go out of style—ballet flats, a good pair of jeans and your favorite white tee, for starters. You could argue that sparkly statement necklaces fall into that category as well. Whether you’re looking at Elizabeth Taylor’s Tiffany version or the more accessible rhinestone confections from BaubleBar, an oversized, glittering piece does add the requisite amount of "fancy" to dress up your favorite going-out outfit. But with twinkly trinkets flooding the market nowadays, the look seems oversaturated. For now, at least, I’ll be reserving my own statement necklaces for fancy occasions only. Meanwhile, I’ll be adding these sleeker, more minimal pieces to all my everyday outfits. Click through to shop 11 versions of the new under-statement necklace!
