Two days after announcing Nicola Formichetti’s exit from Mugler, WWD is reporting that the stylist has been appointed Diesel’s first-ever artistic director. His new position gives him total creative control over the brand, from marketing strategies to store layouts to clothing design. And while he has several other commitments—fashion consulting at Uniqlo and a T-shirt line called Nicopanda, to name a few—Formichetti is up for the challenge.
"We’ve got a lot of crazy ideas," he said in an interview. "But we’re not ready to share them. Yet."
Although Nicola has already begun his new gig, we won’t see the full effect of his work until the Fall 2014 season, which he is working on now. In the meantime, we should all pay very close attention to what Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga are wearing, as he routinely styles them both for events. It will be very interesting to see how this news changes the ladies’ signature styles, especially Gaga’s. While it’s not hard to picture Kim K. in some of Diesel’s sexed-up casual wear, we’re not sure if Mother Monster—she of heel-less platform booties and pantless suits—will be into the look. Or perhaps things will go the other way, and the brand will began turning out ensembles inspired by the pop star’s avant garde tastes. (Or, uh, bags that look like her butt?)
Whatever happens, though, it’s not going to be boring—we know that for sure. How do you hope it all goes down?
