Last night, we headed downtown to the Standard Hotel to fête the launch of Nicola Formichetti’s new Muglerette Graffiti bag, created exclusively for Shopbop. We think the the Mugler creative director’s new carryall, done in smooth purple leather and scattered with hot pink doodles, is pretty fantastic—but upon its unveiling, we were struck with a sudden case of déjà vu.
Perhaps it’s just because we’ve been following Sex and the City prequel series The Carrie Diaries since its January premiere, but doesn’t this limited-edition Mugler bag look mighty similar to young Carrie’s customized-with-nail-polish Mark Cross? Both feature a ladylike silhouette elevated by splashes of bright paint and the scrawled signature of its creator. And both come at a steep cost: the Muglerette’s now available for $1,945 at Shopbop.com, while Mark Cross’ heritage handbags are priced in the four-figure range.
Still, while this isn’t the first time graffiti-laden accessories have gone the high-fashion route—Stephen Sprouse for Louis Vuitton, anyone?—we’d say that the debut of two iconic doodled-on bags in the first few months of 2013 indicates an emerging trend.
