For his triumphant return to the runway after a seven-year hiatus, Kenneth Cole took the whole social media thing to new heights. He introduced his new collection with a video that began as such: "During the @KennethCole runway show, out of respect for other members of the audience, please make sure your phones and tablets are switched…ON." Oh, that darn Kenneth!
The clip went on to explain that the show would be made available on every one of KC’s platforms—Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, Tumblr, Kennethcole.com—and urged guests and livestream viewers to tweet using the hashtag #KCRUNWAY. But this wasn’t just a usual play to get trending fast—for every tweet containing the hashtag, Kenneth Cole Productions pledged to donate one dollar to AIDS research foundation amfAR. It’s nice to see a little philanthropy during the craziness of NYFW.
As for the clothes, they were a neat urban mix of greys, blacks and burgundy (sorry, oxblood). We spotted some military-style hats, utilitarian pocketed skirts and great wool outerwear. But the best accessories on the runway? The smartphones held—and frequently checked—by the models, who snapped multiple photos of the audience during the final walk. My, how the tables have turned…
