When it comes to accessories, most people tend to focus on bags, handbags and jewelry. Hats are often an afterthought and mainly worn for practical ear-warming or face-shading reasons.
But thanks in part to Marc Jacobs’ furry toppers and the fascinators favored by Kate Middleton, hats are a thing again. Baseball caps, too, seem to be having a moment. No longer reserved for frat boys and balding Little League coaches, they’ve been turning up in tons of street style shots this season.
At the Joy Cioci presentation yesterday, I spotted the trend’s newest incarnation: bathing bonnets. Inspired by synchronized swimmer attire, the lacy and printed pieces gave the collection’s peplum-hemmed party dresses and digi-print rompers a flapper-esque look—fitting, considering the anticipation surrounding the impending release of Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gasby re-make. I predict that between now and NYFW Spring 2014, we’ll see hat lovers like Anna Dello Russo and Lady Gaga give them a test run. Will you, too?
