Bad news for all those hoping fashion’s most buff male designer would succeed John Galliano at Dior—this morning, WWD reported that talks between Marc Jacobs and LVMH have ground to a halt.
Marc’s apparently grown mighty attached to his team at Louis Vuitton–and judging by his heart-stoppingly-beautiful Spring 2012 collection for the French house, it certainly seems he’s on a roll at LV. Meanwhile, Phoebe Philo, who’s enjoyed massive accolades for her work at Céline and who would allegedly take the reins at Vuitton if Marc moved to Dior, seems in no rush to leave her current job, either. Conundrum! LVMH, the luxury super-company that owns Dior as well as Marc and Louis Vuitton, is now pursuing a number of other New York designers for the Dior post, among them Jason Wu, Alexander Wang and Jil Sander’s Raf Simons.
We could certainly envision Jason Wu snagging the gig—not only are retro-glam lady frocks his bread and butter, but with his upcoming Target collaboration and loads of A-list fans (Diane Kruger and Reese Witherspoon, anyone?), he’s a bona fide industry darling. And Simons’ technical and creative skills constantly win him praise from even the toughest-to-please critics. As for Wang, we can’t picture his signature model-off-duty aesthetic translating to the label known for 50s-inspired silhouettes—but hey, anything’s possible.
