"Minkettes," as devotees of Rebecca Minkoff‘s spacious Morning After carryalls, lobster-clasped clutches and five-zip cross-body bags are dubbed, know full well that the designer loves some heavy hardware. So it makes sense that when Rebecca was asked to whip up a bag for Mark Cosmetics, she turned to her signature downtown-glam studs to make the project her own. The finished product, called the Delight bag, retails for just $60—far less than the designer’s usual several-hundred-dollar offerings.
I sat down with Rebecca last night at the Delight’s SoHo launch to discuss how she made her mark on, well, Mark.
Tell me how you first teamed up with a cosmetics brand on a handbag.
I had actually become familiar with Mark when they invited me to speak in front of their interns at a special event. Afterward, the team asked me if I’d be interested in doing a bag for them. We also tied it into their sponsoring my own collection—Mark’s been doing the makeup for my shows for the past two seasons. So it was a nice mutual collaboration in the end.
How did you approach designing a bag for a totally different company?
When I’m introducing my brand to a new customer base, I always like to start with studs—that’s what got my label off the ground in the first place. So I did a studded cross-body. I feel like Mark consumers—and reps, too—want the ease of a cross-body bag. You can even tuck in the strap to turn it into a clutch.
What do you think makes Mark so special as a brand?
I love the range of colors and the overall youthfulness of the company.
Finally, what three beauty products do you always keep in your bag?
Mark’s mascara is really nice. And I love their Get in Line metallic liquid eyeliner, too. And I never, ever leave home without some Chapstick.
