Vintage, new or stolen from your mother’s closet—all Hermès scarves are special. But, if you’re looking to acquire an extra special version of the coveted accessory, you should hold out to next February. That’s when the brand is debuting two exclusive collections created by Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo.
Cleverly named "Comme des Carrés"—for all you non-Francais speakers, "carré" means scarf in French—both lines are inspired by Comme des Garçons shops in various cities. First, there’s the "Noir et Blanc" range, based on boutiques in Tokyo’s Aoyama neighborhood, New York and Paris and priced around $493. It will have five styles, all black and white. Then, the more expensive of the two, with items costing upwards of $2,076, is "Couleur." As the title suggests, it includes six very brightly hued options, based on CDG stores in London and Tokyo’s Dover Street Market.
True to the conceptual style she’s well known for, Kawakubo tried to think beyond each foulard’s (your French is getting so much better today!) functionality. "During this joint project, rather than being guided by the idea of the scarf as it is worn, I became interested instead in the beautiful ‘artworks’ that the designs on Hermès carrés represent, and I sought to change them by adding elements," she told WWD of her process. "By combining them with abstract images, we have transformed the carré and created a unique object."
Of course, you don’t have to explain all that when you get 15 compliments within you first hour of wearing one. A simple "thank you" will suffice.
