Well, here’s a collaboration we didn’t see coming: Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte are teaming up with Starbucks on a collection of holiday giftables including totes, cup sleeves, mugs and gift cards. Everything will be covered in a grey-and-green color palette, and the sisters even created a pixelated pattern to serve as the capsule’s signature.
"Our clothing is specialized," Laura Mulleavy told the AP, "and when we are thinking of Rodarte, we choose things that say who we are as designers, but we’re not limited to that. We like the idea of collaborations and putting our thought process somewhere else." Yeah, we’d say America’s favorite coffee company qualifies as "somewhere else." Laura also mentioned that she and Kate are java addicts themselves, so we’re guessing this project struck a caffeinated chord in both of them.
This isn’t the first time Starbucks has done a fashion collab—last year, the company rolled out a line of tees created by CFDA winners Alexander Wang, Sophie Theallet and Billy Reid—but considering the innately "niche" Rodarte aesthetic and the brand’s sky-high price point, it’s an interesting partnership. Then again, considering the sheer amount of lattés, chais, Pike Place drips and doppio espressos consumed by fashion folk on a daily basis, perhaps it’s not that far off the mark after all. Everything hits Starbucks locations on November 13; until then, here’s a sneak peek at the Mulleavys’ special-edition gift card.
