With gowns priced well into the five figures, a seasonal runway show that’s tougher to get into than Fort Knox and a history of dressing only the best of the Hollywood A-list (Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, anyone?), Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy seem like rather unlikely choices to put their stamp on something as ordinary as a sneaker.
But that’s just what the designing sisters have done for Vans’ Custom Culture competition, covering a pair of the brand’s classic white slip-ons in hundreds of shimmering, silvery sequins. The one-of-a-kind shoes won’t be available to purchase, sadly—but they will serve as valuable inspiration for the contest’s student participants, who can put their own spin on a pair of Vans for a chance to win $50,000 for their hgih school’s art program. It’s no surprise that the uber-creative Rodarte duo would be supportive of this particular cause.
What’s your take on the Mulleavys’ latest collab? Are you a fan of these sequined sneaks?
