Yesterday, Selita Ebanks took the time out of her very busy day (seriously, this woman does so much!) to chat with me about last night’s fancy event to support the New Yorkers For Children.
This program hits close to home for Selita, a native New Yorker who was in and out of four foster homes as a child. "It was a very scary time," she said. This program is one of the many ways that Selita—who spends as much time on philanthropy as she does modelling, acting and (most recently) designing swimsuits—gives back and makes a real difference.
"New Yorkers For Children is distinct because it’s one of the few charities that focuses on children in foster care after the age of 12. Fifty percent of these children become homeless," she told me. "Two percent drop out of college. The program provides mentoring, scholarships and support."
To support the cause, there are two all-out, very fashionable galas every year. Last night, Selita wore a CD Greene silver leather dress, which she says is way flashier than her usual demure look. I asked her if she would borrow jewelry, but she said she feels like it’s not worth the hassel. "It’s like giving birth to a beautiful baby and having to give it back!" she said. "What I’m wearing tonight is an afterthought. My prepping includes making sure the event is a success and that all of my friends are there donating a lot of money!"
If you’re down for the cause, too, go to Newyorkersforchildren.org to find a way to help out. As Selita breaks it down: "When people hear the word charity, they think it’s all about money, but you can donate your time too." And check out her new swim line, too. Selita and I decided we’d wear it to the Bronx local pool if our trips to the South of France don’t work out this summer.
