Famously offbeat director Wes Anderson has gained a cult following thanks to his wonderfully wacky movies like The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic. And this past weekend, his latest, Moonrise Kingdom, made box office history. Anderson’s film, which explores the theme of young love against a lush and lovely wilderness backdrop, racked up the highest per-location average in movie history for a non-animated picture. By yesterday, it had grossed a staggering $130,752 while playing in only four theaters.
In the film, two lovestruck twelve-year-olds make a pact to run away together into the woods, causing their respective caretakers—including Ed Norton’s Khaki Scout troop leader—to set off on a wild goose chase. In addition to a stellar cast that includes Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Bruce Willis, Moonrise Kingdom‘s amazing set design, soundtrack and hilarious script make it one of Anderson’s best works yet.
Check out the movie’s official trailer below, and then shop some outdoorsy, utilitarian-chic pieces inspired by the film. True to Moonrise Kingdom‘s color palette of yellows, khakis and earthy plaids, these buys are perfect for any aspiring Khaki Scout—rebellious or otherwise.
