Q: I love the way the new slit wrap skirts look. But what do I wear on top? And on the bottom, for that matter? —Corinne
A: Dear Corinne, The sexiness of this look—I adore it too, in that rabid, must-have way—was something that oddly never occurred to me. But the fashion department is looking out for all of us. “Think of it like wearing a miniskirt,” said fashion director Anne Keane. “I mean, those skirts are totally sexy! You have to go with something somewhat demure up top: a turtleneck or, if it’s warmer, a T-shirt with a crewneck. Or a button-down.”
Shoes? Anne looked at me sharply. “A kitten heel or flat sandals—nothing high.”
Executive fashion director Alexis Bryan Morgan agreed vehemently: “No sex going on, above or below! And definitely tuck in the shirt—you want to see your waist.”
She waved an arm toward market editor Laurel Pantin, passing by in a new slit wrap skirt (it looked to be from Céline; there are also great ones at Burberry, H&M, Jason Wu, Thakoon, Maiyet …) with a faded chambray button-down. The front of the button-down was tucked in, the back left out. The half-tuck: waist-defining, chicly louche perfection.
