If you haven’t bought or sold anything on Copious.com yet, you might be doing so soon. The e-commerce site, which initially debuted in the late spring of 2011 and mostly deals in the re-selling of secondhand goods, just received an additional $5 million in financial backing and is in expansion mode.
Already, the company has enlisted a number of well known names from the digital fashion scene—including "The Man Repeller" Leandra Medine and Wendy Lam, the blogger behind Nitro:licious—to set up mini boutiques with pieces from their own closets. These high profile sellers, along with other active members, are recommended to customers based on each one’s social media activity and personal taste. The more users use this feature, the easier it becomes to find products they’ll love.
"Instead of a top-down, one-view-for-everyone catalog-based experience, we use an individual’s connections and the interests they’ve identified on Copious itself," the site’s chief executive officer Jim Rose told WWD. "what they ‘love,’ who they ‘follow,’ what they buy, what they sell and their Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr connections—to shape the experience."
Now that there are so many ways to browse secondhand stuff online (a similar model called "The Cools" launched earlier this year), we’re interested to see how Copious uses this funding to set themselves apart.
