Perhaps after that hilariously raucous placement in last year’s The Wolf of Wall Street, it was time for Steve Madden to get the Jordan Belfort-approved treatment.
Yesterday, Women’s Wear Daily announced that Steve Madden and Brian Atwood are joining forces to create a new high-end shoe brand, set to compete against labels such as Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik. The new label, which has not yet been named, will be designed by Atwood, produced by Madden and sold in standalone stores separate from Steve Madden and Brian Atwood retailers.
"The collection is just women’s shoes, but handbags are possible," described Atwood. "So is a men’s capsule collection. The men’s market has changed a lot. Men are more interested in fashion."
This news comes shortly after WWD announced that Steve Madden had acquired Brian Atwood from its mega-conglomerate owner The Jones Group. The Jones Group—recently taken over by a private firm Sycamore Partners—has been selling or discontinuing its underperforming brands, which has included Rachel Roy’s designer line.
