On summer Fridays when everyone else leaves New York City to drink Skinny Girl margaritas with real housewives in the Hamptons, I will be driving the other direction to my family’s house in Lake Placid, NY.
It takes an extra hour or more to get up to the Adirondacks, where the water’s not only placid but frigid, and "s’mores making" rivals "listening to the loons" as the most exciting after-dinner activity. But I’m a serious person, and I’d rather be up there getting in touch with nature and doing Thoreau-ish intellectual things. Like hiking (with Carly Rae Jepsen on my iPod), reading (Fifty Shades of Grey on my Kindle) and boating (tanning and texting from the bow).
Click through below to see the stuff I’ll be be packing, and the things I wish I were. In time, the money saved from missing out on other vacation spots—with their fancy beachside meals and $14 cocktails—might mean I can actually buy them all. Yay, nature.
