In the past, save for mentions of hockey champ Sean Avery’s magazine internship experiences or Gisele and Tom Brady’s whirlwind romance, the fashion industry has remained decidedly separate from the sporting world. Until now.
According to WWD, the NFL’s upcoming “It’s My Team” campaign will see some recognizable football fans, like Melania Trump (Donald’s better half, of course) and Condoleezza Rice, mixing their own favorite fashion labels with NFL tees, caps and other team-centric items. Styled by Tiina Laakkonen, the ads will hit fashion magazines in August—just before football season kicks off. “We want to show that you can be a fan by what you wear to work, going to the gym or out at night with girlfriends,” says Rhiannon Madden, the NFL’s director of apparel. “It’s also a message of empowerment. It’s your team—not your guy’s team.”
Coinciding with the campaign’s release, Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman will debut a limited-edition NFL shirt to build anticipation around the New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys game on September 5.
