Karl Lagerfeld is a befuddling man. While we can accurately predict his own outfit (black skinny suit, sunglasses, white ponytail), drink (Diet Coke) and cosmetics (Shu Uemura, always) of choice, his creative process remains an ever-evolving enigma. Just compare the designer’s latest Chanel muse, Tilda Swinton, to the It girls usually repping the brand, like Alice Dellal and Blake Lively—or even the It men, such as Brad Pitt for Chanel No. 5. The 52-year-old actress just doesn’t fit that mold.
Not that her age will make Tilda’s campaign for the house any less stunning; if anything, we think she’ll outdo those bright young things. As we know from her many, many award-winning movies, those androgynous, Northern European features (Scottish, to be exact—which may have played a role in her casting, as she’ll be modeling the label’s tartan-tastic Pre-Fall 2013 collection), are mesmerizing on film. And, as the Kaiser told WWD, she is "a timeless icon of elegance."
