Monday’s news that revered fashion designer and former model L’Wren Scott had taken her own life continues to puzzle and shock the fashion industry. While several sources told WWD that the 47-year-old had recently been suffering from depression, these same sources reportedly "expressed surprise" that such a confident and cheerful figure would have the motivation to commit suicide.
Despite Scott’s outwardly ebullient demeanor, it has also been reported that these more recent feelings of depression had intensified over the last few months, beginning in January and culminating in the cancellation of her planned presentation during London Fashion Week, due to production delays. Additionally, a source told WWD that her label is unlikely to continue to operate, and that its fall collection will not ship to retailers.
The New York City medical examiner scheduled an examination of her body yesterday afternoon, though the New York City Police Department’s initial investigation cited the death showed no signs of foul play.
Yesterday, Scott’s longtime boyfriend Mick Jagger addressed the tragic news by posting the following statement on his website: "I am still struggling to understand how my lover and best friend could end her life in this tragic way. We spent many wonderful years together and had made a great life for ourselves. She had great presence and her talent was much admired, not least by me. I have been touched by the tributes that people have paid to her, and also the personal messages of support that I have received. I will never forget her, Mick."
While many of the couple’s close friends and family members have chosen not to comment, a myriad of high-profile industry colleagues and fashion executives have stepped forward to both mourn and question her death.
One such companion who saw the couple frequently and vacationed with them in Mustique, Tommy Hilfiger, spoke out: "L’Wren was a very talented woman with great taste. Dee and I have been friends [with her] for quite some time now, and she was a generous and loving person. We will miss her deeply."
