Whispers that indie label Vena Cava might shutter for good began about a year ago, when its Spring 2011 collection didn’t make it to production. Today, we’re happy to learn that the brand was only on hiatus and will be available next season, with new financial backing.
LF USA, the American division of Hong Kong-based Li & Fung Limited—a big manufacting company that produces a huge chunk of the clothes sold in the US—has signed a deal with the line’s co-founders Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai.
But don’t think the duo is going mass. Luckily for Lisa and Sophie, the partnership simply means they get to keep doing what they do best: being creative.
"What we loved about Li & Fung when we first met with them is that they felt strongly about giving us total creative control, even with some really far-out branding ideas," Buhai told WWD about the agreement. "We do ‘zines, dinner parties, videos and online garage sales, and they loved those kinds of ideas and were willing to let us do what we thought was right for the brand."
If the partnership goes well, both parties have discussed expansion in the future. "We have ideas for homeware and for men’s wear," Buhai said. "We are interested in doing more print publications, little movies and eventually one day we’d like to have our own stores." LF USA president Rick Darling also told the daily that there "could also be diffusion possibilities."
But, until that thrilling day an entire boutique of Vena Cava goodies launches, let’s get excited for the brand’s first collection since Fall 2011. The pieces, which were inspired by "neo-Noir movies from the Seventies," land in select boutiques and Barneys New York this coming fall. (Which, as you savvy shoppers know, really means like…July.)
