Romola Garai plays Bel Rowley in BBC America’s drama The Hour and while it’s easier to compare the show—and the wardrobes—to that other ’50s era drama, Mad Men, don’t be fooled.
I’m wild about Mad Men, but I’ve decided that The Hour—Bel, in particular—is my sartorial match. The Hour is more Network than Mad Men and Bel is more Diana Christensen (played by Faye Dunaway in the classic 1970s film) than Joan Holloway or even Peggy Olson.
You see, Bel’s the boss—the lead producer of an-hour long news program. While her look is certainly femine, she wears clothes with a sense of authority, whether it’s a form fitting knit sweater dress in brick—made sensible with a skinny black leather belt and graphic brooch—or a men’s white shirt. But what really makes Bel’s look is her hair: worn to collarbone with just the slightest curl.
I’ve got a pretty healthy obsession with suiting—and everything Mid-Century Modern—so the idea of wearing inherently sexy, vintage-inspired pieces with just enough authority is incredibly appealing. Click through to shop styles inspired by Bel and The Hour below.
