An imported wine specialist from the epicurean internet startup shares her work wardrobe–from days in jeans to vineyard visits.
As an imported wine specialist at the epicurean luxury startup Lot18, Janine Lettieri has a pretty cool job. Although most of her time is spent at Lot18’s industrial-edged Manhattan headquarters, her job comes with its fair share of built-in travel: Lettieri treks across the globe to find new wines and bring them to the site’s discerning clientele (did I mention it’s invite-only?). But as the company is transitioning from its early stages, Lettieri’s style is transitioning as well.
On any given day, Lettieri could make three wardrobe changes. “The style in the office is young and casual—jeans, sweaters, sneakers or flats,” says Lettieri. “I’m 34 and sometimes even I feel a little old around here.” But the informal office environment doesn’t translate well for meetings with suppliers. “If I have a snug, cute blazer, that’s an immediate improvement.” When traveling, she needs to think about both utility and professionalism. Simply put, “I need boots I can wear on the plane, walk around a vineyard in, and then scrape the dirt off of and wear to semi-formal lunch."
Her work isn’t all about fashion, obviously. After working in hospitality during college, she took part in the wine program at New York’s now-defunct 27 Standard. She then became a sommelier at Fleur de Sel, Le Bernardin and the Waverly Inn. She’s also quite the wine academic; today Lettieri holds certificates from the Court of Master Sommeliers and the American Sommelier Association and is pursuing the Master of Wine credential, which only 30 Americans hold.
