Somehow, there are two biopics chronicling the early life of late designer Yves Saint Laurent currently in production, both titled Yves Saint Laurent, both set for release in 2014. Drama!
To be clear: One film is directed by Jalil Lespert and supported by Saint Laurent’s former business partner and lover, Bergé; the second is directed by Bertrand Bonello and backed by Francois-Henry Pinault, head of Kering, the conglomerate that owns Saint Laurent. This rivalry has been brewing since April, despite the fact that production for Lespert and Bonello’s films began this past spring and September, respectively.
All potential legal battles aside, the trailer for Lespert’s film has arrived! The film stars French actor Pierre Niney, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the late designer, pictured above. As you’ll see in the trailer, Yves Saint Laurent details the designer’s rise to stardom from 1958 to present day. If you don’t speak French, don’t expect to understand much, but you better believe we’ll be front row when it premieres in theaters (with subtitles) in 2014.
