It’s hard not to adore Zooey Deschanel. Our March cover girl’s hysterically funny (as her show New Girl and website Hello Giggles can both attest), has the most enviable sense of retro-cool personal style and owns one of the best sets of bangs in the biz. Now, she’s just launched her first-ever clothing line—a capsule called “To Tommy From Zooey,” in partnership with Tommy Hilfiger—and it’s every bit as bright and bubbly as the actress/singer herself.
What you might not know is that Deschanel’s always wanted to try her hand at design. “When I was in high school I made my own clothes and I grew up creating a lot of my own looks,” she revealed in a press release. “I would think up patterns myself.” So when the star met Tommy Hilfiger—a designer who shares her love of all things classic, preppy and vintage-inspired—and began discussing a collaboration, it felt like a natural fit. The result of their team-up? A collection of 16 dresses, priced from $99 to $199, along with a smattering of jewelry and handbags, all done up in ‘60s shapes and shades of red, white and blue. Unexpected details abound, like prints concealed on the underside of pleats and pockets placed just off-kilter.
“It’s a mix of mod and nautical, which I like to call ‘modical,’” Deschanel explains. And fans of the New Girl star might notice that some of these clothes recall the sweeping one-shouldered seersucker gown Hilfiger made her for the 2013 Met Gala; on a night meant to celebrate all things punk, hers was perhaps the least punk look on the red carpet. But to hear her tell it, that dress was a strategic move in and of itself. “I went with seersucker because I thought, ‘If everyone is doing punk then punk is no longer punk!’ Naturally I had to do something traditional!” Our advice for Deschanel: Keep the traditional dresses coming. You’re pretty darn good at wearing and designing them.
